Christmas has arrived and we are 1 year and 3 mths of part time boat building in, so many new skills have been learnt, knocking up shapes with timber and epoxy has become child’s play, there are many ways to support a dinghy on a boat and for me personally a targa bar makes a catamaran look amazing, some design innovation resulted in what turned into something that looked great, supported the four 60 watt solar panels i purchased in out of the way location, lifted the dinghy out of the water with ease and provided a few extra hand holds around the place. I was hoping to get all of the decks on prior to the wet season and a brief shutdown over Christmas but it wasn’t quite to be.
I also made the decision to widen my turret by 100 mm each side, this gave me a little more head room clearance when stepping down into the hulls and made my lounge area more spacious, i also decided to modify the shape of my turret a little to make the windows a little neater and added some extra timber into the sides so that i could have nice rounded curves all around the turret with big glue fillets at the base.
For the rudders I opted to use a naca profile to give a bit more bite, My dad helped out with these and they were glassed into place underneath the boat. Being able to weld and work with stainless saves you a heap of time and money.
Targa bar being made
all ready to hold the mast up now
comparing what the angles will look like
vertical??

moulded corners for the targa bar,

little jig to give the top of the targa bar a slight curve

again having a look to see whether a vertical targa bar looks nicer than a sloped one, the me the angles matter and I think i got pretty close to perfect with this one

rear view

decision made glued in place

targa stringers scarfed up ready for corner stringers

ready for top skin

I made the decision to increase the size of my turret by pushing the sides out 100 mm each side, this made my side decks near the turret around 600 but this still felt like enough room to wheel a wheel chair down

stabiliser for targa bar and also useful for running wiring down and putting up canvas rain covers if needed

sexy...

rudders being shaped up by my dad

front deck going down boat is becoming more and more waterproof

foredeck anchor lockers, the curved deck looks great I think and has come up well

bathroom nearly finished all glassed and painted

rudder steering sleeve that slotted onto scehdule 40 stainless

naca profiles, pretty sure i used the 0010

steering arm welded on now that we have the right angle
